Skills in Focus events

Skills in Focus is a series of events organised by the Skills Committee to stimulate debate around current skills issues.

Skills in Focus Participants

Attendees at the events include senior representatives from skills organisations in Scotland and beyond, including policy makers, public sector organisations with learning and skills interests; and employer bodies from the key economic sectors identified by Scottish Government.

Skills in Focus is sponsored by Skills Development Scotland and the Scottish Funding Council.

    The tenth Skills in Focus event took place in Atlantic Quay, Glasgow on Friday 12 June 2015 hosted by Paul McKelvie OBE, Chair of the Joint Skills Committee. The Skills in Focus series is intended to stimulate informed debate around current and future skills issues. Professor Ron McQuaid from the University of Stirling presented on the long-term scarring effects of prolonged periods of youth unemployment.

    The event featured presentations on the key Scottish findings from the Employer Skills Survey, Employer Perspectives Survey and Working Futures from Dr Vicki Belt and Alex Thornton.

    The eighth Skills in Focus event took place at the Mercure Hotel, Glasgow on Friday 20 June 2014, hosted by Paul McKelvie OBE, Chair of the Joint Skills Committee. The Skills in Focus series is intended to stimulate informed debate around current and future skills issues. The event featured a presentation on skills shortages and the role of the Migration Advisory Committee from Professor Jonathan Wadsworth.

    The seventh Skills in Focus event took place at Jury’s Inn, Glasgow on Friday 22 November 2013, hosted by Paul McKelvie OBE, Chair of the Joint Skills Committee. The event featured a presentation titled 'Making, shaping and showcasing career services at work' from Dr Deirdre Hughes, OBE. Dr Hughes is a Commissioner at the UK Commission for Employment and Skills (UKCES) and Chair of the National Careers Council for England. She has written extensively on UK, EU and international careers policy, research and practice.

Skills Committee

The Skills Committee is jointly led by the Scottish Funding Council and Skills Development Scotland. It is a strategic committee to support and advise our respective Boards on the skills challenges in Scotland. The committee works closely with the Scottish Government, employers, business organisations and students to ensure that Scotland has the right high-level skills and an employable and adaptive workforce.
