Foundation Apprenticeships

Foundation Apprenticeships are a new, work-based learning qualification for secondary school pupils.

How does it work?

Foundation Apprenticeships enable pupils in S4 to S6 to complete elements of a Modern Apprenticeship while still at school. Depending on the subject they choose, pupils will study towards a foundation Apprenticeship alongside their other subjects, but they'll also spend part of the school week at college or with a local employer. As well as working towards industry-recognised qualifications they will develop skills, experience and capability in a live business environment.

Why should you get involved?

Foundation Apprenticeships are designed to provide earlier exposure to the world of work, equipping young people with the skills, knowledge and experience they need to go on to further or higher education, accelerated entry into a Modern Apprenticeship or employment.

And because they're linked to the key growth sectors of Scottish economy, young people will be able to get industry experience to kick-start a successful career in their chosen field.

Future ambition

We want more pupils to have more access to more subjects. By August 2016 we want foundation Apprenticeships to be available in every part of Scotland, and by 2020 we want foundation Apprenticeships to be part of every school's offer.
