The National Plan For Gaelic

The National Planb for Gaelic

The National Plan for Gaelic aims to secure the status of Gaelic in Scotland.  Developed by Bòrd na Gàidhlig  from the Gaelic Language (Scotland) Act 2005 the plan sets out to co-ordinate efforts and resources, and work in partnership with the Scottish Government to improve the status of Gaelic.

There is a continuing decline in the number of people who speak Gaelic.  The National Plan aims to address this by making progress in four key areas: the home, the community, the place of learning and the workplace.

The plan includes a National Gaelic Education Strategy.  This provides guidance on the development of Gaelic education in Scotland and aims to work in partnership with local authorities, Gaelic organisations and public bodies.

At the moment 13 public authorities are developing Gaelic Language Plans to reflect the aspirations of the National Plan.  It is also expected that public authorities will encourage people to use Gaelic when dealing with them, and will expand their organisations Gaelic services and resources.
